Dr. Stephen K. Chmaitelli
Chief Veterinary Officer
Education: Texas A&M, Class of 2000
Hometown: Houston, TX
Pets: Jersey (Rough Collie) & Ebbets (Labrador Retriever)
Dr. Chmaitelli, a Houston native, spent ample time at his grandfather’s ranch as a young boy, where he was tasked with feeding and medical treatments for the cattle. These responsibilities and experiences put him on a lifelong path towards Veterinary Medicine. He graduated from South Houston High School in 1993 and went on to attend Texas A&M University. He briefly walked on to the football team before realizing more important goals academically and becoming involved with the TAMU Singing Cadets. Dr. Chmaitelli obtained early acceptance into veterinary school at Texas A&M and graduated in 2000. Along with GOVC, he owns A to Z Exotics and Capture, which provides services to African Game ranches across the state. To this day he still enjoys his profession and has learned to balance it well with life. He enjoys playing, piano, guitar, and singing, but has also found time to stay active by playing semi-pro rugby for Houston United (and has been awarded Clubsman Of The Year twice!).
Dr. Robert Calabrese
Dr. Robert Calabrese (or Dr. Rob for short) is originally from San Angelo, TX. He began his career in the veterinary industry as kennel assistant and met Dr. Chmaitelli at one of his first jobs at a vet clinic in Austin, TX. After working as a vet tech for many years, Dr. Rob completed his undergraduate degree at Texas A&M, class of ‘09. He then went on to earn his veterinary degree at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. After working as a public health veterinarian for the Scottish Government, he moved back to Houston to begin his career as a small animal clinician. As fate would have it, Dr. Chmaitelli was looking for an associate veterinarian, and Dr. Rob enthusiastically joined Team GOVC in March 2018.
Dr. Rob is married to a native Houstonian, and they welcomed a new baby in February. The Calabrese clan, complete with their Labrador Birdie, enjoy swimming in Texas rivers, attending live music and exploring Houston’s museums and parks.
“I’m really excited to work and serve the Houston and Garden Oaks community. In my short time here, I’ve really felt welcomed and can’t wait to explore every nook and cranny Houston has to offer.”
