While cats are generally low-maintenance pets, that doesn’t mean they don’t need veterinary care! According to the American Association of Feline Practitioners, 83% of cats visit the vet at least once in their first year with their owners. However, over half of them never return to the vet in subsequent years.
It may be a challenge to get a cat in a carrier, in the car, and to the vet, but just like any other pet, cats need regular wellness care—like exams, vaccines, and preventative medications—to stay healthy. Cats are great at hiding illnesses, so it’s important to have a veterinarian check them out at least once a year to make sure they’re still in good health. Plus, it’s much easier (and cheaper!) to treat the disease before it’s progressed very far, and regular exams allow us to spot problems early.
You can make your cat’s visits easier by helping him get comfortable with his carrier at home. This way, he’ll associate the carrier with positive feelings and experiences.
